Wine Down and Paint Calendar Changes:

February class will be moved to February 10th. Please mark your calendar. I have changed the painting to Dyptic Art (DIP TIC) which is 2 panels painted together and hung to make one big piece of art. We will paint wine bottles since many have asked to bring this back.

Wine and Paint News: I am making a few changes in the calendar. I hope these changes will appeal to most of you. Instead of painting a Picasso portrait in February we will do Dyptch Art. Using 2 seperate panels, couples will paint one picture. The sample, although busy, was very easy to do. I thought since the wine bottle picture was being requested as a "come back" wine and paint we could do that. If you have a picture idea for your personal home you'd like to do bring 2 copies for you and your "date". Please keep it simple. See the sample below for my sample.
The modern martini can be any colors you choose and if you'd rather do wine glasses that is fine. This is an easy class so bring a friend.

**Note that the classes are downstairs in the old weight room/Cazadores by the pool eating area.

Still Life Value Study

We have been working on these for around 5 weeks

It is amazing how you view the pictures when you take

the time to sketch. I have never been taught this.

Our next class was to learn measurement. Very confusing

but a necessity. When your placement on the canvas is right

and the values ALL is well. .

This is my value sketch of a man from an ART magazine. Our lesson consisted of finding a picture and doing a value sketch. Amazingly, I was able to draw the values and not think of him as a picture of a man. Below is the actual picture I used in the practice.

These are 2-value studies from my new found frind, my sketchbook. I have NEVER been able to draw a human being or any part of one. I had to break out of my comfort zone here. I viewed the subject as a black and white picutre. It is amazing what you see!

This is my second attempt. This is an interresting individual to me. When I first saw him I thought ok I am going to do a value study of him. This is also a 2-value study.

New Territory

I have had the opportunity to take a ten week class with a local artist Sara Beth Fair. It has been a very challenging and rewarding class. Sara Beth, to say the least, is incredibly knowledgeable about art, the masters who greatly influence her, God and knowing how to incorporate all her wisdom into a class which has changed my way of thinking. My way of viewing a piece of artwork has changed from this endeavour. I am on a new journey into finding my style (whatever that is) and it has become an adventure to me. I have been incorporating new knowledge obtained from her into my whole thought process. Yes brainwashed! I have been challenged to think differently and view the creation surrounding us with a whole new outlook.
We have been practicing value studies for 5 weeks and yes I think I got "IT". Our next class was to take a master's painting and "measure" it with our paintbrush. After several tries at this, I believe I have figured it out. One classmate equated it to calculus--that did it for me. I have a math mental block so the comment gave me a block too. Too funny to think that math had anything to do with ART! See, a new lesson learned.
I am grateful to Sara Beth in giving me this process, as challenging as it is, will help me with my creativeness and hopefully a since of self esteem to know I CAN DO IT! I have always been able to create from given talents of our creator but now with a more sophisticated background.

The next few posts will be from my sketch book. Value studies from paintings that others have done.

After talking with the folks last night, some want to paint their favorite mascot. I certainly don't blame them!!! Roll Tide!!! SO--- All are welcome to come in June and paint with us. I would LOVE to have you!! Those going to college, let me know your dorm colors or sorority colors and we will go to town. I am excited about this class and you will too. All ages welcome (13and up)!!!

Starry Night Wine down and paint

Last night was amazing! We had a group of very talented painters who really didn't believe that they could "do it" and some who had not painted since middle school. Well, from what I saw, all had that hidden creative touch. ALL the masterpieces were gorgeous and as far as I could tell, everyone went home happy. Bravo to all!!

Thank you for being there for the first night of many "wine down and paint" nights. It was great to see those who have come back (I didn't run off :) and those who have trusted me to show them how to unleash their talents. I am looking forward to the next wine and paint in October. See you there.

I will supply everything, you bring wine, or your beverage of choice and a snack if you feel up to it.
5:30-6:00 "Wine" down time and we will paint at 6:00 Please be on time.

If you bring a guest add $5.00 to the cost. (A guest may not be a Hampton Cove Homeowner who is not a Hampton House member)

Crosses are becoming my signature subject. I love the fanciful fun in painting them--non-stressful too. I was asked to do this for a co-worker whom I had already painted a cross for. The first cross hangs in her room at home. Her daughter missed it so much that I painted this for her apartment in college.

Ahhh...football season! The Alabama and Auburn rivalry, tailgating, rammer jammer, Roll Tide must I say more. I had the privilege recently to have a private paint party for girls who were heading off to their perspective colleges. We tried to paint something

to decorate their dorm rooms AND include the schools mascots. We had a blast and the end pictures definitely a hit in the dorm rooms.

I have loved sharing my talent with others. I had a private 21st birthday party for these adorable girls. We painted martini glasses at a Mexican restaurant. They did an awesome job and the "entertainment" from the locals at the bar kept us laughing.

St. George Lighthouse

We have really found St. George and Appalachia to be our new favorite beach destination. The quaint town is so inviting, and the locals welcome you like a neighbor. The unspoiled beach is so gorgeous and the family atmosphere draws us back.

The St. George lighthouse is on the barrier island and near where we stayed. I attempted to do a water color post card. Yup another challenge for me but fun. I still need to figure out how to work fast and keep the water right. Maybe I will stick with acrylic or oils.

The beach is my favorite place on earth. I love how my senses are overwhelmed each day-from sun up to sun down. My birthday trip in July was amazing. I enjoyed a martini on the beach at sunset--Just what I wanted.

This is a water color (first attempt) I tried to paint at St. George Island. I took a watercolor class over the summer and found it to be very challenging. So different from what I am used to! I was excited that I was able to finish it before the water dried!

For those of you following my blog and wondering where I have been, well I have been helping to paint the set at Huntsville High School for the play Cinderella. It is now complete and opens this weekend. I have not seen it yet, but highly encourage you to go! I had the opportunity to paint with 3 other highly talented women. It was a unique experience in that I had to learn how to paint on such a LARGE scale. Where my tendency is to pay attention to details, those details disappear from the perspective that big is better so the person in the back row can see it. A whole new thought process! I had a blast and may consider volunteering next year. So if you want tickets go to the Huntsville High Theater department and order them. YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS IT!

Sketch out your picture and block in the main colors. Work the same colors according to their values. The main thing is
"don't think" do this quick. Once you fill in the spaces you will be able to come in and detail the subjects.

Last weekend I had the priviledge of taking Sara Beth Fair's workshop at Burrett Museum. She is amazing and full of so many ideas. She is so talented and a wealth of information. I see art and painting in a whole new way.

We had two days full of intense teaching. We learned everything from "seeing" to cleaning up! What we need to make our work space perfect for us. We left overloaded with so many positive ideas I don't remember driving home! (felt like it)

I want to say if you ever have the opportunity to attend her classes do it you will not regret it!

We all try to imitate other painters or try to paint like them but we have to have our own individuality! Create your own style!

Above is the first stage a thumbnail sketch showing values of the "subject". Whether you are painting a still life or plein air do sketches first from different angles to see if there is harmony. Find a focal point!

Lillian's Cross

I was in the mood to paint another cross. A dear sweet lady I work with celebrated her 61st birthday today and in my absentmindedness forgot when it was. So, I painted this for her as a gift. It is actually on a 3x3 mini canvas and I painted the easel it will stand on in a wash of the mustard yellow. I love how it turned out with alot of texture. This picture really does not do it justice. I hope she likes it!

I have seen a great decline of interest in my classes and feel maybe I should take the time and focus on my painting. I will be happy to do private parties with a minimum of 5-6 artists. Ok don't laugh! I agreed to do the challenge for Karin Jurick and boy was it just that! We were sent a picture of a random person and had to paint them. I think this woman ended up looking like the abominable snowman on Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer movie. I had a hard time making her look like a person. I think the original picture was a bit dark so I could not get the color right. So... Random person if you look at my blog. So Sorry for your portrait I Did try!!

Roosters Again!!

In my absent minded state Thursday night, I forgot my camera for my paint class. I wish I had remembered it because Yvonne and Karen painted the prettiest Roosters yet!! I was so proud of their work.

Last night was a blast!! Two students that had never painted before ended up with gorgeous pictures of rolling hillsides and vineyards! Friday night I had the pleasure of teaching 17 12-13 year olds how to paint for a birthday party! We did tie die and peace signs. It was a blast and all were unique in their own way!! The girls had fun but not as much as I did! Thanks for including me in your special day Melissa.

Tuscan Landscape

Last night we painted a Tuscan Landscape. ALL of the pictures were beautiful. We incorporated ideas from two different pictures. I loved each masterpiece. YOU all did a fantastic job! Let me tell you about our special guest. I arrived before 5:00 to get prepared and the room had a squirrel in it. He had been there for days. We had to bring in John Tanner and Dan Fincher to help scare him out. It was quite an adventure. He had eaten or taken a bite from corks, plates, paper towels, window ledges--must I go on. Once we were able to get to our painting,the night turned out to be a huge success. Thanks to all who made it special for me. See you soon!

"Crabby" afternoon

First Annual Wine and Paint

The first annual WINE and PAINT was held tonight at the Hampton Cove Club House and was a HUGE success!! I would like to thank ALL who attended. I am very excited that your creative juices flowed like they did. Another THANK YOU to Kathy Tanner for making the night possible. AND a HUGE thank you for the enthusiasm each brought to the night! It made it for me! A dream come true. It amazes me how different and wonderfully unique each painting ended up. Jeff you definately made an "A" on yours and have been promoted from kindergarten ART! Seriously, everyone did a fantastic job. I appreciate each person coming out and making the night memorable for all of us. I hope to see each of you again soon.

Our First "DINE and PAINT"

By the huge encouragement from my sweet friends, and the need to have fun nights painting on "our side of the mountain" I have started two paint nights. One will be held at Carson's Grille (formerly The Corner) times TBA so watch my blog and for the next 6 weeks in Hampton Cove at the Hampton House starting on September 15. Social time from 5:30-6:00'ish and paint after that. I am so excited to be "teaching" friends and if I can get my husband to come family. It has been sort of a dream of mine to be able to share my creative side with others. NOW the dream has become a reality. I am also looking into another place in Huntsville to have similar classes. If you would like to join us at anytime, please email me at apope@hsv.k12.al.us. Space is limited at both classes so I will have to take the first 16 painters.

The class is very informal. If you have ever said "I cannot paint, I cannot draw stick figures" YOU will be surprised. I will walk you through the painting and everyone will go home with a masterpiece. I supply everything. At Hampton Cove, the class will be held in the old weight room. BYOB light snacks provided (unless you would like to bring an appetizer). At Carson's Grille, you can either eat or come and visit.

September 15th we will paint Abstract Crosses.

"Supreme" Angels

Ok, wondering about the name. Here is the story. I painted this in a class with Leslie Lockhart who is known for her angels. I was so excited about the class. I really had a hard time with this because painting people is not my specialty. I left the workshop thinking all the way home what exactly could I do to improve this aside from painting it again. I got home and showed my husband who immediately said "I'm impressed, you painted the "Supremes"! OK, well that got us laughing so hard. I guess another will be painted with lighter fleshtones. Leslie, thanks for a fun workshop and I cannot blaim this on the lighting.

I was asked to paint this for a birthday. The only colors I was to include were purple, white lavender and black. I just could not see black in it so I chose a dark purple/eggplant color.

Tuscan Sunflowers

My dream place to visit is Tuscany. I will one day see the famous sunflowers and hopefully paint them. This landscape was painted in hopes of seeing it in person. The flowers fade into the distance and the vinyard fades into the sunset. My husband grabed this painting and it hangs in his office. Lucky him to be able to dream of Tuscany at work.

After she passed away and we went through her prized possessions, my sisters asked if I would paint each one a picture resembling it. After painting three, I liked each differently. They loved them and more will come.

I have been to San Fransisco and it is exactly like this in some places. I enjoyed being stretched a bit.

I didn't feel like painting today so I checked out some new blogs. My favorite was Miro Sinovcic. He immigrated to the United States from Croatia 24 years ago, landed in NYC and decided to call it home. His primary subject matter is just that NYC. Check out is style. I love it. I just returned from a trip to NYC in May and boy how lucky he is to have a new subject around each corner. It is an amazing place to visit, you cannot take everything in in a week --GREAT excuse to go back.

I was sitting in the kitchen this morning looking out at my cone flowers and daisies taking over in my garden and thought that just painting a simple garden would be fun. Not being able to get out and really paint this was my only alternative.

3rd update from the Crip "Knock Out Cast"

Ok don't think I am nuts. I got this cast on Monday -choices were green(already had), pink (been there done that), BLACK-(HOT ), RED (ON FIRE), blue (BLAH), purple-NOT, orange (for Auburn and Tenn. fans only). So this was my last resort. In my last update from the crip, I told you about the world being handicapped-well NO ONE noticed me with my green or pink cast. I opened doors with the help of skinny legs, pulled my way throughout Wal Mart on a cart which lost its battery (kind of the good foot motoring the "vehicle" and pulling myself pulling on the shelves)WELL let me tell you, highlighter yellow is the way to be noticed. I had lunch with a friend today, went to the front of the line, left there and some guy said "can you turn it down a bit" --no one made comments before, I went back to Wal Mart today with my friend and a lady standing outside taking in a leisurely cig, probably on a break from shopping asked if she could help me. Stopped me in my tracks! Had to thank her for noticing. Does it not want you to get out a marker and go to town? I had to share this and I am seriously thinking of writing that book I mentioned before.

I found a picture with these gorgeous flowers and loved the bright colors. Red is so exciting to me and the vase was a watering can. The picture was taken in a garden with zinnias in the background. I cannot wait to get outside to paint!

Hi to all who visit my blog,
I wanted to update you on my progress. I went yesterday and had my second visit post surgery and got those nasty stitches out! I now have a highlighter yellow cast. Had to find fun in this miserable venture. I did find out that I have TWO weeks left hauling around fluorescent casts and using my "skinny legs" (the name I have given to my crutches) SO I think my doc was surprised and could not believe I questioned the 2 weeks left in a cast. Last YEAR it was 6. I will have the boot for 10 days-here again-SHOCK to my ears. I pray this will be the end of all this nonsense! I so desire to get outside to paint while things are still pretty. It has just been hard with skinny legs and knock-out casts. I have become a future advocate for the handicapped, may write a book on how to be handicapped in a world that IS handicapped and if anyone wants suggestions how to carry things with skinny legs, deal with daily chores and the best places to visit while handicapped you can call me!! Special thanks to those who have been making encouraging comments on my blog and noticing the paintings or a lack there of. I will revamp my desire and get back on track.

Hi everyone,
In all my spare time this summer, I have found in my daily routine is to check out many blogsites. This morning I was looking at one of my newer additions Paint Dance blog and saw a new painter mentioned on the site that I thought would be fun to follow. I added the site to my blog for quick reference. It is Don Sahli's paint studio. I think what I like about his work is that he is not intimidated about using lots of color. I absolutely love color-the more color the better. Check out his site- I have no doubt you will love his work.

I was not sure of painting on paper but felt like trying. I found the paper absorbed the paint quickly.

This is a challenge I did from Following the Masters. This challenge was to pick any of Maxfield Parrish's paintings and paint our version. You are given the liberty to paint what you see or change it and paint it your way. I thought the church was really pretty and the simple colors very comforting. Peaceful Night was painted by Parrish in the 1950's.

Betsy's Cross

We were invited to a friend's 50th birthday last weekend and I thought I would be nice and not give a "gag" gift. Also, being stranded with my cast, this was something a little special for her. There is something about painting the crosses. I love how they come together and the mix of colors make me happy. Each is unique in every way--like us :)

Mediterreanean Landscape taken from a Pablo Picasso painting. I have been watching this new site where you "Paint the Masters" and you have to choose the subject and then find a picture to do from a master painter. I really love Picasso. His use of colors and simplicity really draw my attention. I thought this would be easy but found out differently. I do like the primary colors with the green added. I painted this on artist board in acrylics.

Rooster Frenzy

Ok! I have no idea why roosters are so popular. While blog searching in all my free time I have seen more roosters and the funny thing is I never paid them any attention. NOW I am curious about their barnyard frenzy. Ruling the roost! I notice them everywhere and in all colors. I was looking at the first rooster I painted and thought I would try again. This is also painted with a palette knife. I had a blast with mixing the colors.

Ok have you ever tried Wickles? Wicked Pickles? They are a must have in the pantry. I was introduced to them from a friend and found them at the store. I know you can purchase them in Tuscalooa, Ala. They are sweet/hot. I was in a funky mood and felt like eating pickles and painting that is where this idea came from.

I actually should have titled this "I wish I could have been there" because a friend invited me to go paint in the country on Sat. May 30 but my surgery was the day before. This barn is a picture I borrowed from Carole Foret's site to paint. I guess I will get outside and paint sooner or later. Kind of hard to carry all you need when you are on "evil" crutches.

I wanted to attempt a simple beach scene. I love the beach and watching everyone enjoy its beauty. Children on the beach are amazing to watch. I love their unending curiosity about everything they encounter. I am not sure this is how I wanted this to be so you may see it again touched up.

I have been watching my garden come alive and wanted to paint something as colorful as it is. I first painted the multicolored background and thought the flowers would look bold on it. I really liked the way each color stands out.

I am doing better. I have a hot pink cast and laying low. Went out yesterday and about wore myself out. Today staying here to recoup. Painted some and will post soon! I loaned my camera chip to a friend to pring off NYC pics and will get it soon.I am excited to have added a few new blogs to follow. In all my free time, I have found others offering challenges to paint. I am also looking to try out water color. Never have used this medium but thought I'm not going anywhere so why not. I guess these cross pictures have been a favorite to many of my friends. This is a commissioned work for Lindsey for her birthday from a friend. She gave me a sample of her bedroom fabric to match the colors. I love how the crosses stand out and the colors were perfect. I hope this was a big hit at the party.

This is my first entry to Karin Jurick's Different Strokes for Different Strokes. It is a 6x8 acrylic on canvas. Karin offers a paint challenge every few weeks for you to paint. I decided to try it out. If you have never been to New York City, you need to go. It has endless streets of tall buildings and taxi cabs galore. I went for my first time in November with my dear sister and her husband. It is an amazing city to visit during the holidays. Larger than life decorations offer supurb photo shots. Times Square at night is quite an attraction you won't want to miss. If you took your watch off and had no idea of the time, you'd think it was the middle of the day due to the thousands of lights filling the night sky,a true shock to the senses. Now I know why it is the city that does not sleep.

I painted this with a palette knife and a few strokes of a small brush. It was my second attempt at using the knife. I love the texture it creates and the vibrant colors are exciting to look at.

I found a picture of the fruit in a magazine and it caught my eye.

I LOVE how this painting turned out. I really was not in the mood to paint but I thought about trying a new paint technique. This is painted totally by a palette knife. I had tried using one during my Creative Spirit class but was a bit intimidated by it. So, my first thought was if it does not turn out it can be painted over. I had so much fun painting it and cannot wait to find my next subject.

We went to Tuscaloosa a few weekends ago for the A-day game and we were walking by the quad and I saw Denny Chimes through the trees. For those of you that may be unfamiliar with the landmark it was built across the street from the Presidents mansion on campus. At the foot of this tower, star football players have left a foot print and hand print for fans to see. I have walked by many times before and never noticed how beautiful itactually is. Funny thing is when we walked by the chimes were playing the hymn The Deep Love of Jesus. Well, what a better way to reach out to the students. Of course it would help to know the words. I couldn't get the words out of my head.

This a commissioned piece also and I was given a pillow for colors. I had a hard time for some reason with this. I think I actually painted parts twice until I was satisfied with its composition. I added the gold color because the reds and green began looking overpowering. I actually love how it turned out after I sat back and looked at it when it was finished.

This was painted for a girl turning sweet "16". Her mom gave me many ideas of what her daughter was "into" and I made a collage of all that would fit. Hopefully she will find a place in her dorm room one day to enjoy it even more.

"Humming" in the garden

"Humming" in the garden is one of my favorite windows I was asked to paint. The person receiving it loves humming birds so I was asked to paint something with the birds. It is hard to see them but they are feeding on the flowers.

There are no inside windows in the offices at work and decided to give my co-workers a window with their favorite things painted on them. This is cropped a bit due to a glare on the glass.
